Principal Test Engineer

Job description

Reporting to the Technical Director you will work closely with all product stakeholders, including software and hardware engineers, at this highly specialised company. You will need to show significant experience in creating test strategies and plans, including the creation and support of test harnesses. You will have experience of system testing, preferably with exposure/knowledge of testing Layer 2 and Layer 3 network devices and network protocols.

Due to security requirements, to be considered, you must be a UK National (not Dual-National) and be able to gain/hold a high-level security clearance (DV).

Essential competencies / experience:
 
  • ISTQB Foundation Qualification
  • Knowledge of Testing Methodologies
  • Experience in planning, estimating, and designing system testing
  • Test case design and execution to meet functional / use case requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • 5+ years’ experience working as a test engineer (networks, security, high assurance, critical systems environment)
  • Customer facing skills

Desirable competencies / experience:
 
  • ISTQB Advanced Qualification
  • A relevant STEM degree

Key accountability / previous experience:
 
  • Creation of functional tests to qualify product requirements
  • Convert Customer/Product Requirements to effective test/use cases
  • Significant root causes analysis and providing corrective actions - either individually or in conjunction with the development team
  • Ability to evaluate test results against requirements
  • Familiarity with Defect Tracking and version control software
  • Ability to create comprehensive test execution reports with metrics
  • To promote test engineering within the company and gain a good understanding of various technologies and suggest improvements to the test approach where appropriate
  • Previous experience of working collaboratively with other testers to ensure the spread of good practices and knowledge
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure a robust and well written suite of automated acceptance tests
  • Contribute to discussions on test process and procedural improvements
  • Learn and develop skills in new technologies, where applicable, apply agile techniques within short periods of time
  • Practical exposure to Cisco products (CCNA certification is advantageous)
  • Knowledge of protocol fuzzing techniques
  • Knowledge of applied cryptography in the context of network security devices
  • Experience in supporting end customers in a Field Application role and providing training support (including generation of training documentation)
  • Provide peer review of technical documents produced by the product development team
  • Familiarity with network test automation, RFC conformance and stress test appliances (Ixia, Spirent etc.)
